KAYANZA January 24th (ABP) – Batwa families residing in the headquarters of Kayanza province (north) are asking the authorized authorities to help them so that they have decent housing and latrines, like the rest of the population. Those families live in huts and do not have latrines, it was noted during a field trip there by the ABP.

In total, there are 18 families from the Batwa community residing in the Gitaramuka 3 district, on Musave village, in the heart of the town of Kayanza.

Members of those families say they sleep poorly at night and are often threatened by the rains because their huts are covered only with straw. Fabiola Minani, one of the members of that community, residing in the same locality, believes that the lack of decent housing is due to the fact that they settled in a very remote area, in the bottomland along a stream called Nyavyondo, which serves as a border between the Musave and Kirema villages. Those families are asking the Kayanza municipal administration to intervene so that they are provided with the sheets and trees necessary for the construction of a home that meets the standards.

Contacted on that subject, the administrator of the Kayanza commune, Mr. Godefroid Niyonizigiye, said he was not aware of that situation, adding that he will now contact the provincial director in charge of family and social development, in order to look into to that problem.
