KAYANZA, April 25th (ABP) – Cases of school drop-outs are still a challenge facing the education sector in Kayanza province (north). The province’s director of education, who blames parents who are lax in their children’s education and children who go into petty trade instead of school, is calling for everyone to get involved to put an end to school drop-outs.

According to Désiré Hatungimana, the provincial director of education in Kayanza, 6,288 pupils dropped out of school in the province during the first two terms of the current school year. He pointed out that the main causes of those drop-outs include ignorance of the importance of school, the lax attitude of some parents towards their children’s education, petty trading, which is a magnet in the communes of Kayanza and Matongo, and the exodus to Tanzania in some communes.

He also spoke of diseases, especially eye diseases, where the province had recorded 5,321 cases up to the end of the second quarter. Mr Hatungimana called for a concerted effort to put an end to those school drop-outs. The province recorded 18,173 dropouts during the 2022-2023 school year, with the commune of Muhanga leading the way.
