KAYANZA October 20th (ABP) – The assistant to the Minister of Hydraulics, Energy and Mines, Mr. Félix Ngendabanyikwa, asks residents of Kayanza who do not have decent latrines to pull themselves together and use water properly to block the path to diseases caused by dirty hands, including cholera, which is making waves in certain areas of the country. He launched that call on Wednesday during the ceremonies of the day of achieving the status of “End of Open Defecation (ODF)” which took place in Gahombo commune of Kayanza province,  a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

During those ceremonies, the assistant to the Minister of Hydraulics, Energy and Mines, Mr. Félix Ngendabanyikwa, welcomed the step taken by the inhabitants of that commune in the construction of decent latrines. He indicated that before the sensitization carried out by the staff of the Burundian Agency for Hydraulics and Sanitation in Rural Areas (AHAMR), only 103 households out of the 10,384 in the Gahombo commune had toilets that met the standards and that for the moment, 10,074 households equivalent to 97% have it. Taking advantage of that opportunity, Mr. Ngendabanyikwa called on the people of Kayanza, especially heads of households, to do everything possible to ensure that every household has a decent latrine and to use water appropriately in order to block the road to diseases of dirty hands including cholera which is making waves in certain corners of the country.

Shortly before, the governor of Kayanza, Mr. Rémy Cishahayo had warned that anyone who has not built a decent latrine by the end of that year will be fined, it can be reported.
