BUJUMBURA August 23rd (ABP) – A measure has just been taken by the communal administration of Mutimbuzi in Bujumbura province (western Burundi) to limit the marriage irregularities observed in past years.

From now on, it is forbidden for people coming from other provinces and communes of Bujumbura province to come and register a new marriage in this commune as it was done, the administrator of Mutimbuzi, Mr. Siméon Butoyi, told a check by ABP.

He pointed out that families have been abandoned; children have dropped out of school for lack of parental support, because their fathers had contracted new marriages in Mutimbuzi commune.

This measure is there and is producing good effects, Mr. Butoyi said, adding that for people coming from elsewhere who want to be received and enjoy this right, they must bring with them a written document duly signed by the council of village leaders of  their native villages attesting that they have not contracted another marriage.

If by misfortune, a marital status agent overrides the measure, the sanctions are planned and would be applied, he insisted.
