Preventive treatment against malaria in a pregnant woman

BUJUMBURA December 31st (ABP) – A pregnant woman should take preventive treatment against malaria, during the prenatal consultation, from the second term of her pregnancy, Dr Déogratias Ntukamazina, obstetrician gynecologist at the Kamenge University Hospital Center, told the press on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 in an interview.

Dr Ntukamazina said that a woman who becomes pregnant, becomes vulnerable to many diseases, including malaria in a severe form by losing consciousness.

He said that recently in our country, they have instituted a preventive treatment with surfadoxine primetamine against malaria in a pregnant woman.

During the antenatal consultation, from the second trimester of pregnancy, a pregnant woman should take three tablets taken once, and take all three doses, one dose after one month, he explained.

The obstetrician gynecologist was able to note the effects of a pregnant woman on malaria, where he reported that it is the severe pathology, which can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, abortion and even the pregnant woman can fall into a coma.

Dr. Ntukamazina also specified that the pregnant woman from the first trimester of her pregnancy, must undergo a prenatal consultation for her well-being and the well-being of the fetus.

He also called on health personnel to properly receive those women in prenatal consultation by explaining to them the importance and usefulness of that treatment. He also did not forget to give advice to the spouses, so that they can accompany and encourage their wives in the prenatal consultation.
