KAYANZA June 12th (ABP) – Some 1,136 women and men have been victims of gender-based violence since early this year until the end of May 2023. This is indicated by the coordinator of the provincial Bureau for family and social development of Kayanza, Mrs. Célénie Ndayisaba.

In order to eradicate this violence, she promises to conduct awareness meetings for couples so that they change their behavior and realize the importance of establishing their homes. Apart from that, it requires the intervention of everyone. This was revealed during a partner coordination meeting held on Thursday June 8, 2023.

According to Mrs. Ndayisaba, the forms of violence that have been more recurrent than the others are economic ones because the victims amount to 574. These are 506 women and 68 men.

Other cases of violence reported in large numbers are psychological ones which number 346, she said.

As for sexual violence, the same information source mentions 133 women who were victims, including 11 cases of rape committed last May. However, she deplores the fact that some elderly women have been raped while asking for accommodation when it was dark while returning home.

To curb this phenomenon, the coordinator of the provincial office for family and social development in Kayanza, who says that the first victims of gender-based violence are children, promises to continue awareness-raising meetings in order to encourage couples to change behavior, which will enable them to realize the importance of founding homes.

It is at a time when the Kayanza High Court, as well as the prosecution, report that in the event of gender-based violence, they do everything to rehabilitate the victims in their right and punish the perpetrators in an exemplary manner.
