KAYANZA, January 2nd (ABP) – Coffee growers from Kabuye zone in Kayanza commune and province commend the fact that the Burundian government is in the process of making NPK-type chemical fertilizer available for the fertilization of coffee trees. Those residents say that, to address the shortage of this fertilizer, they have opted for the use of organic manure.

According to those coffee farmers from the Kabuye zone, the shortage of NPK-type chemical fertilizer has had a negative impact on coffee production. While attempting to remedy the situation, some proceeded only with mulching and spraying against coffee bugs while others resorted to organic manure. The latter say they are satisfied that coffee production, both in quality and quantity, has significantly increased thanks to organic manure.

For example, the members of the cooperative called “Dusangirijambo” indicate that they receive bonuses from year to year thanks to the quality of their cherry coffee. The leader of that cooperative, Mr. Dieudonné Nkurunziza, indicates that coffee growers are already aware of the techniques for transforming organic manure for the fertilization of their coffee orchards. Given that we are in the payment campaign for NPK-type chemical fertilizer, Mr. Nkurunziza asks coffee farmers not to miss this opportunity in order to have quality coffee.

Note that the coffee growers grouped in the said cooperative received on Friday December 29, 2023, a bonus of BIF 250 per kilogram of cherry coffee A and BIF 100 per kilogram of cherry coffee B.
