BUJUMBURA, November 9th (ABP) – The Cabinet members meeting Monday, November 6, 2023, in extraordinary session, at the headquarters of Kirundo province, passed the bill revising the bylaws of REGIDESO. One of the major reasons cited during the meeting concerns the organizational structure of REGIDESO which is out of step with the activities which have multiplied, hence the need to put in place two other directorates given the scale of activities at the level of the General Directorate, according to the Secretary General of the Government, Mr. Prosper Ntahorwamiye, in a press release.

The Cabinet members proposed, among other things, to update the share capital of REGIDESO, as long as the proposed one dates from old documents.

The Cabinet also passed the draft decree on modalities of application of the law amending the law establishing the Mining Code of Burundi in relation to artisanal and semi-mechanized mining.

The reason given was to “maximize revenues from the mining and quarrying sector and boost the country’s economy”, in order to achieve Burundi’s vision for 2040 and 2060. Implementing texts have been listed for the implementation work of that law.

The press release indicates that an action plan was approved for the development of the mining sector in Burundi. This plan is structured around main lines which are: building institutional capacities and institutional reform of the sector, promotion of good governance and transparency. A timetable for implementing the planned reforms has been adopted and will run from November 2023 to April 2024. The draft decree was passed subject to recommendations.

In 4th position, the Cabinet approved the Project Document for an additional donation of 50 million US dollars to the Republic of Burundi, for the additional financing of BI-Hydroelectric Power Stations of Jiji-Mulembwe.

That additional financial assistance program aims to fill a financing gap, in order to complete and achieve the development objective of the project, as revealed in the conclusions of the Cabinet meeting.
