BUJUMBURA September 18th (ABP) – The Burundi Senate President, Emmanuel Sinzohagera, joined the people of Nyabiraba commune in Bujumbura province (west of Burundi) on Thursday, September 14, 2023, in the work of tracing contour lines on which they planted Bana grass, to protect a field of approximately 1 ha belonging to the “Dushiringuvu hamwe dukore” cooperative of Nyabiraba, to sow potatoes, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

In a speech addressed to the people, the Senate President indicated that the Government established Thursday dedicated to environmental protection to protect and restore soil fertility. He noted that Burundian soil has become sterile due to rapid population growth and poor land management.

He also recalled that God created nature and man to manage nature in order to live well on this earth, while maintaining this earth and the water found there.

Formerly, Mr. Sinzohagera said, the soil was very fertile and fed the people without problem but we took it lightly in its management and protection.

He invited the people of that locality to dig contour lines on Thursdays, to protect the fields and the harvest. To breeders, he recommended that they respect the law which prohibits the wandering of animals on hills and public roads, after having seen cows grazing on the hill, when they should be in permanent stabling.

Mr. Sinzohagera also urged the people to good management of the land for future generations. In addition, the President of the Burundian Senate called on the administrator of the Nyabiraba commune to mobilize people to cut down the eucalyptus trees found in the marshes near water sources.
