BUJUMBURA July 3rd (ABP) – On the eve of the celebration of the 61st anniversary of Burundi’s independence, the chairman of the Observatory for the fight against corruption and economic embezzlement (OLUCOME), Mr. Gabriel Rufyiri, hosted a press conference, in Bujumbura.

Quoting the former President of France, Mr. Charles De Gaulle, who said that “Without economic independence there is no more independence at all”, Mr. Rufyiri added that independence is consolidated by the prosperous economy.

On that occasion, he said that after the demise of Prince Louis Rwagasore, national hero of independence, Burundi had many problems, such as the political crisis and the civil war which generated a lot of consequences.

According to the chairperson of OLUCOME, the economic growth rate is 2% and more than 70% of Burundians live below the poverty line. He deplored the non-respect for time which constitutes a factor of underdevelopment, the absence of truth despite the fact that there are several religious denominations, and the non-respect for laws such as highway code and others. He called on the people of Burundi to raise awareness about the future of Burundi while reflecting on the synchronization of thought, word and action.
