CIBITOKE June 14th (ABP) – At least three hectares of eucalyptus afforestation went up in smoke due to bushfires during the night of June 11 to 12, 2023, on Rugendo and Kirinzi hills of Mugina commune, Cibitoke province.

According to the Permanent Secretary of Mugina commune, Delphin Nzobakenga, that fire of unknown origin was first reported by the people from the Mutogwe sub-village of Rugendo village, around 9 p.m.

The hard work of extinguishing the fire started at that time, but could not prevent it from spreading to the Muranga sub-village of Kirinzi village, he said.

The fire was brought under control around 4 a.m., according to the same official.

As for the provincial forestry official, Fidèle Nzigamiye, the administration must control the activities of the loggers, check if they have the authorization, or sufficient space to install their ovens.

He also asks that all State woodlots be surrounded by firewalls, against bush fires, which can be observed especially during the dry season.
