KAYANZA February 14th (ABP) – The Truth and Reconciliation Commission proceeded on Friday, February 11, 2022, in the capital of Kayanza province, to the provisional closure of truth-seeking activities on the events of 1972. Opened by a prayer ecumenical, the ceremonies were enhanced by the presence of the vice-president of the TRC and the commissioners within the latter.

In his speech, the vice chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Mr. Clément Noé Ninziza, indicated that they were able to interview more than a hundred people aged 60 and over and that they collected information that will help them to make a report that gives the panorama of the violence committed in 1972. At the same time, he continued, the TRC identified two mass graves in the Banga zone of the Matongo commune in which he was taken from the human remains of around 260. Mr. Ninziza pointed out that in general Kayanza province has experienced atrocities and that it contains people who hold useful information for rewriting the history of Burundi.

As for the Ngozi province, he said that it was also bruised because it was the province where the prison was located and that many people were murdered from this prison. “In the minds of Burundians, Ngozi has become like the center of execution,” he added, adding that the TRC collected a lot of information there despite the pits dug during the TRC’s investigation. did not yield human remains. Here, he justified that according to the information collected on the spot, there was a lot of disturbance of the ground which caused the displacement of the human remains buried in these places. The next step will be to identify all the victims of all periods that shook the country in order to make a list, he concluded.

Note that in his welcoming address, the legal adviser to the governor of Kayanza had suggested that the inhabitants of Kayanza who have information relating to the 1972 tragedy confide in the TRC so that the truth comes to light and that bruised souls be soothed.
