BUJUMBURA February 27th (ABP) – The President of South Sudan and current President of the East African Community (EAC), Mr. Salva Kiir Mayardit, arrived that Friday, February 23, 2024 in Burundi for a visit of work. He was welcomed by his counterpart Evariste Ndayishimiye at the Ntare Rushatsi presidential palace.

According to a joint statement read by the EAC Secretary General, Dr. Peter Mutuku Muthuki, the two heads of state reviewed the state of peace and security in the EAC. They noted that peace and security are a prerequisite for the social and economic development of any community, and vital to the achievement of community goals. They called on partner states to fulfil their obligations as enshrined in the treaty establishing the EAC.

The said press release also specifies that the two heads of state reaffirmed their commitment to the Nairobi process led by the EAC and have underlined the need for complementary and rapid implementation within the Luanda process to avoid a further deterioration of the security situation in the east of the DRC, which risks spilling over into neighboring partner states.

The two Heads of State asked the two sister states of Burundi and Rwanda to ensure the implementation in good faith of all previously agreed commitments resulting from the bilateral dialogue between the two partner states. That will boost the implementation of the EAC integration imperatives which include the free movement of people, goods and services, according to that press release.
