MAKAMBA, January 2nd (ABP) – The rains which fell in the Nyanza-Lac commune of Makamba province (southern Burundi) caused material damage in the Kabonga zone. The road leading to Tanzania was partially cut at the Mushara River and completely cut at the Mukurezi River Bridge.

The leader of the Kabonga zone, Mr. Emmanuel Nsanzerugeze, indicated that all the drinking water supplies which supply the zone and the headquarters of Nyanza-Lac from Mukurezi were destroyed; hence an emergency rehabilitation is required. In all five villages of that zone, there was damage including several fields destroyed, he deplored.

In Gisenga village, 28 houses were destroyed, while in Nyabigina, 30 houses were destroyed; 10 pigs and 11 goats went missing. In Kabonga, 13 destroyed houses were counted, 16 houses in Gasaba and 15 in Mukurezi. However, the Kabonga zone leader has indicated that the number continues to rise. The equipment that was in the houses was also damaged, added Mr. Nsanzerugeze, specifying that Gisenga village was the most affected.

The administrator of the Nyanza-Lac commune, Mrs. Marie Goreth Irankunda, said that the administration will alert State authorities and technical partners to assist the victim population and help in the rehabilitation of drinking water supplies. She advises the people to draw contour lines and dig catch basins to capture runoff water. In the Mukungu zone, the rain also destroyed 4 houses, according to the administrator of the Nyanza-Lac commune.
