BUJUMBURA October 16th (ABP) – The Central Census Bureau (BCR) organized, Thursday October 12, 2023, in Bujumbura, a consultation conference with international non-governmental organizations working in Burundi, as part of the mobilization of resources, in favor of the general census of population, housing, agriculture and livestock (RGPHAE).

In his speech, the BCR chairman, Nicolas Ndayishimiye announced that the preliminary stages have been completed and that this investigation will immediately enter its proper phases.

According to him, with the month of November 2023, we will have started the main census mapping which will take five months in the field, he added, where the mapping agents will circulate throughout the country, to map hill maps, take the referenced data from households and infrastructures supporting socio-economic development.

He declared that after completing that mapping in February-March 2024, they will then move on to the census itself, starting with the main enumeration which will take place in August 2024.

Mr. Ndayishimiye further recalled that the RGPHAE is part of the 2020 international cycle of general population and housing censuses, launched by the United Nations Statistics Commission, which covers the period of 2015-2024. It is also part of the 2020 global agricultural census program launched by FAO.

He thanked the representatives of non-governmental organizations, such as UNFPA and FAO, who have been mobilized since the preliminary and preparatory phases of the census, providing multifaceted assistance to the Central Census Office, as part of the implementation of the RGPHAE in Burundi.

Regarding the genesis of the ongoing census, he said, preliminary activities began in 2019, with the development of the basic strategic document. These continued in 2020 with the development of strategic advocacy documents to mobilize resources and that of communication for social mobilization. It was in that same year that a decree establishing the RGPHAE was signed by the President of the Republic, Evariste Ndayishimiye, before proceeding with the official launch of the activities of that census on September 10, 2021, he said.

The National Census Orientation Committee (CNOR) and the Census Technical Committee (CTR) were set up and held meetings as part of monitoring and guiding activities related to the RGPHAE, added the president of the BCR, adding that the government of Burundi has already made available to the BCR an envelope of 46 billion to carry out that census and that contributions from partners who have not done so are expected to carry out this survey successfully which will provide necessary data in planning.
