KIRUNDO March 20th (ABP) – The President of the Republic of Burundi Evariste Ndayishimiye officially inaugurated on Friday March 17, 2023, during his two-day visit to Kirundo province (northern Burundi), a project of private economic operators named ” Aqua Burundi” which will consist of raising fish in cages in Lake Cohoha, in the Yaranda village of Kirundo commune and province.

In his speech, the Head of State thanked the economic operators who have set themselves the goal of increasing production from fish farming. He insisted that this will contribute to the development of the country. “We will not only be able to collect money, but also people will easily find fish on the market and consume them on a large scale, and therefore, they will have good health”, the Head of State said.

President Ndayishimiye invited other entrepreneurs to learn from that project, and invest in fish farming. He also pointed out that the country develops thanks to entrepreneurs, and not by the rulers of the country.

The President of the Republic also pointed out that everyone is rich, even small farmers, explaining that all you have to do is direct your little project well, and little by little the bird makes its nest. It is in that context that he asked Burundians in general and the people of Kirundo in particular, to wake up in favor of self-development and development of their homeland.

In order to work in good conditions, the President of the Republic recommended to REGIDESO to supply electricity, as soon as possible, to the infrastructures of that project which is very beneficial for the country.

The chairperson of the board of directors of Aqua Burundi, Mrs. Daniella Nziyumvira, meanwhile, indicated that the objective of the “Aqua Burundi” project is to produce a lot of fish of the tilapia érautica variety so that the people can easily find those products on the market because the project will also carry out the marketing, Mrs. Nziyumvira specified.

She said that at the beginning, the project is able to produce 1000 tons of fish per year, while having the hope that they will reach 4000 tons per year, and 100 people will benefit from the employment. She added that they will be able to hire 200 employees over time. Technically, Aqua Burundi has installed 16 cages in Lake Cohoha, and each cage must contain 50,000 young fish to be raised.

In order to facilitate the works, the project was able to install drinking water, and the surrounding people will benefit from it, while planning to share electricity with the same people, as long as REGIDESO would have facilitated the food, the chairperson of the board of directors of Aqua Burundi said. She did not fail to inform the President of the Republic that the track leading to the head office of the said project needs to be maintained, hence she asked for the rehabilitation of that public infrastructure.

Mrs. Nziyumvira indicated that the said project was designed in collaboration with the Norwegian company called “Will hands” working in the same sector of fish farming, as the representatives were on site.

Subsequently, the representative of Aqua Burundi, together with the representative of the company Will hands, gave a gift of a large painting to the Head of State, on which a large fish appears. He finally thanked other entrepreneurs who were present at the launching ceremonies of the project, without forgetting the diplomats, more especially the ambassador of the European Union to Burundi Claude Bochu, who fights body and soul to accompany Burundi towards sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the inauguration of the Aqua Burundi project, the Head of State received in audience the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahammat, in the premises of the Kirundo provincial office, where they discussed behind closed doors.
