BUJUMBURA April 13th (ABP) – The activities planned for the month of the graduate school of the University of Burundi, 1st edition 2022, are going well, this was said on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 by the director of that school, Professor Juma Shabani.

After the official launch session of the very activities, last week, by the Rector of the University of Burundi, Professor Doctor Engineer Sanctus Niragira, other activities have already been implemented, said Pr. Shabani. These include the planting of fruit trees and flowers on the graduate school campus and doctoral sessions for the 3rd cohort and 4th cohort.

The general goal of that month of the doctoral school is to share with the university community of Burundi, the stakeholders in Burundi and outside, updated information on the results achieved during the period of April 2021 to April 2022, the challenges encountered and future prospects. One of the specific goals of that first edition of the month of the Graduate School is to prepare the mission of identification of the future support program of the Research and Higher Education (ARES) Academy of Belgium at the University of Burundi, following the decision of the Commission for Development Cooperation (CCD) to continue the institutional support program with the University of Burundi for the period from 2023 to 2027.

On the agenda for this month of the graduate school of the University of Burundi are therefore several activities. These include the presentation of research results carried out by doctoral students and major statistics on the graduate school, the launch of the online training platform dedicated to scientific advice for political decision-makers and capacity building for academic managers, jointly organized by the graduate school, the Network of African Science Academies and young scientists of Burundi. There are also plans for a capacity-building workshop on identifying predatory journals, indexed journals and books, and journals with an impact factor, as well as an interdisciplinary public health research program workshop.

Other activities that will be implemented relate to the evaluation of doctoral students by the support committees, the organization of doctoral sessions, the launch of the Center for Incubation and Acceleration of the University of Burundi (CINAUB), the launch of the project on mental health, the launch of the Virtual Institute of the Graduate School, the organization of seminars linked to the international post-graduate research program in pure and applied mathematics and the organization of a conference-debate on the theme “Research-Development, and Knowledge Economy in Burundi”.

At the end of this month of April 2022, 15 doctoral theses will have been defended while 15 others will be defended before the end of this year, said Professor Shabani.

These activities of the month of the Graduate School of the University of Burundi are implemented under the theme: “The Graduate School of the University of Burundi: a model of doctoral training and quality research in Africa”.
