578 new cases of Covid-19 are detected in the internal population per day since December 13, 2021

BUJUMBURA January 7th (ABP) – The positivity rate for Covid-19 tests carried out on January 2 and 3, 2022 is 2.83% against 4.48% for the tests carried out on December 28 and 29, 2021, as indicated by the Ministry of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS in a report published on January 4, 2022 on the pandemic situation.

Burundi has reported an average of 578 new cases detected in the internal population per day since December 13, 2021, the date marking the start of the current strong outbreak.

Among 1475 new cases detected on January 2 and 3, 2022, there are 1339 cases of community transmission and 136 imported cases, including 107 cases at the port of entry with DR Congo, 6 cases at the port of entry with Tanzania and 23 cases at the national airport. Those figures recorded by Burundi reflect the active circulation of the Coronavirus in the general population.

In the last 3 consecutive weeks, the average increase in cases is 2,055.9% compared to the previous 3 weeks.

During the last 14 days, there have been a total of 10,272 new community cases, including 21.42% (2,201 cases) detected in the city of Bujumbura.

A total of 1661 new contacts were reported on January 2 and 3, 2022. Among them, 47 contacts tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus; or an incidence of 6.17%.

All 48 districts of Burundi have recorded at least 1 case of Covid-19 in the past 14 days. This reflects the active circulation of the coronavirus in the country.

The number of tests carried out in the last 2 weeks has increased with a daily average of 16,653 tests while the average number per day was 5,725 tests in the previous 2 weeks, an increase of 190.88%.

The average weekly testing rate over the past 4 weeks is 51.9 tests per 10,000 inhabitants while this average rate over the previous 4 weeks was 10.4 tests per 10,000 inhabitants.

In national aggregate, 1,221,838 people have been tested for Covid-19 in Burundi; among them 33,551 were confirmed positive; 31,096 are already healed, representing a cure rate of 92.6%; 14 have died while the rest are being treated.

As of January 3, 2022, the vaccination report shows that out of a population of 12,840,558 inhabitants, people fully vaccinated (one or two doses) represent 0.01% for the Sinopharm vaccine and 0.03% for the Johnson vaccine.
