NGOZI March 26th (ABP) – Women in Ngozi province celebrated Ngozi International Women’s Day, 2024 edition, on Friday March 22. The ceremonies took place at the Agasaka stadium and began with a long parade. Among the failing bodies, they could see women working in public and private services as well as police and military women, etc. The president of the provincial women’s forum Ngozi Bénigne Nkurunziza returned to the giant step taken in terms of respect for women’s rights in Burundi. She cited in particular the right to pursue training courses of their choice at secondary level as well as in higher education, the right to elect and be elected at all levels and the free choice of spouse. She also spoke about the right to serve in the defense and security forces; the right to freely choose a profession of their choice.
Bénigne Nkurunziza, however, deplored the violations of the rights of girls and women who continue to be noticed with impunity in Ngozi province. She pointed out the rapes of minors, the spoliation of family property, etc. She called for a combination of forces to promote the rights of Burundian women with a view to facilitating the achievement of the objectives of the vision of Burundi emerging in 2040 and developed in 2060.
The governor of the Ngozi province Mr. Désiré Minani returned to recent measures to promote women’s rights; pillar of development. That authority solemnly announced that by April 30, 2024, severe sanctions will be imposed on couples living in illegal unions. In that northern province of Burundi, more than 1,300 couples in illegal unions have already been identified. The governor of Ngozi province took that opportunity to urge the population to register their children at birth. That is when more than 28,000 children were registered during the recent late birth registration campaign initiated by the governor of Ngozi province.
He announced that three confederations of cooperatives will be created for better supervision of the people, thus calling on women to join cooperatives. That is the confederation of Marangara cooperatives which will include the communes of Marangara, Kiremba and Nyamurenza. Then, the confederation of Ngozi with Ngozi, Busiga and Mwumba as well as that of Tangara with the communes Tangara, Ruhororo and Gashikanwa. Governor Minani also indicated that the leaders of those 3 confederations will each receive a vehicle to effectively supervise the cooperatives which must increase production for export with a view to generating and repatriating foreign currency.
