BURURI, April 16th (ABP) – On Friday 12 April, the Minister of National Education and Scientific Research, Pr. François Havyarimana, officially opened a school called Kigutu International Academy, located in the Health Works village centre of Kigutu in the Vyanda commune of Bururi province (south-west Burundi).

The school has 120 students in the biology, chemistry and earth sciences sections, as well as the IT section.

Dr. Alice Rwamo, the school’s headmistress, said that the pupils attending the school come from 13 of the country’s 18 provinces.

According to her, the selection criteria are objective. They include the results obtained in the national competition, gender balance and another test taken at the school. The school differs from other private schools in that it aims for quality, not commercialisation. All children are welcome,” said Dr Rwamo, adding that the payment of school fees depends on the means available to parents.

Dr Déogratias Niyizonkiza, founder of the Village Health Works centre, explained that the centre was initially set up to treat the local population, and that it has since built a hospital with sophisticated medical equipment and qualified health care staff. According to Dr Niyizonkiza, the centre’s future prospects include the creation of a medical university, and no pupil will be excused for failing at school, as all the conditions for learning will be in place.

The Minister of Education and Scientific Research warmly thanked Dr Niyizonkiza for his work, which fits perfectly with the government’s vision of promoting the country’s development through health and quality education for all. He invited other Burundians living abroad to follow Dr Niyizonkiza’s good example and invest in their country. He also urged the school’s management and students to maintain its infrastructure and equipment.  Note that the school receives finalists from basic schools.
