RUMONGE March 7th (ABP) – The Catholic diocese of Bururi proceeded on Saturday, March 2, 2024, to the inauguration of the Laudato-Si-Le Palmier University, built in the headquarters of Rumonge province.

The inauguration ceremonies were attended by the Minister of National Education and Scientific Research, Mr. François Havyarimana and the Secretary General of the CNDD-FDD party, Réverien Ndikuriyo.

In his speech, the Bishop of the Diocese of Bururi, Mgr Salvator Niciteretse said that the project to create the Laudato-Si-Le Palmier University was carried out by the Catholic Diocese of Bururi, with the aim of responding to the concerns local parents whose children attend distant universities and contribute to the development of the country. It is a way, he insisted, of increasing the number of educated people, which was very low in that locality.

The rector of that university specified that the doors were opened in January 2024 with an enrolment of 76 students, around twenty of whom come from the DRC.

It started with two faculties, according to its rector. Those include, among others, the Faculty of Science and Technology as well as the Faculty of Social Sciences.

According to the rector, it plans to include fishing, fish farming, agro-food processing, tourism and hospitality in its teaching program.

In his speech, the Minister of National Education and Scientific Research praised the contribution of the Catholic Church in promoting education in Burundi. The creation of that university is the response to the appeal that the State had made to the Catholic Church.
