Burundi will not participate in the final phase of the CAN in Ivory Coast

BUJUMBURA September 14th (ABP) – Burundi lost its chances of qualifying for the final phase of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), which will be played in Ivory Coast in January 2024. Everything was decided during the 6th and final day of qualifying in Cameroon at the Garoua stadium.

Burundi started the game well. In the first half, the Burundian selection dominated the Cameroonian selection by creating very clear opportunities. In the 2nd minute a shot on target from Caleb Bimenyimana almost deceived the Cameroonian goalkeeper, André Onana.

In the 38th minute, André Onana deflects a powerful strike from Saidi Ntibazonkiza, long-range more than 30 meters from the Cameroonian cages. The Cameroonians created 2 chances which resulted in nothing. At the end of the first half the score was 0-0 and Burundi qualified.

Burundi collapsed in the second half. From the start, in the 46th minute, Burundi conceded the first goal on a defensive error, it was midfielder Brian Mbeumo who scored this first goal. In the 58th minute, Burundi conceded the second goal following a mix-up in the penalty area, on a Cameroonian corner. The goal was scored by defender Christopher Wooh.

The Cameroonians fold the match in stoppage time through their striker Vincent Aboubakar in the 93rd minute. Burundi loses 0-3 and is disqualified from the final phase of the CAN. Cameroon, now 1st in the group and Namibia 2nd, has won their tickets for the final phase of the CAN.
