BUJUMBURA June 30th (ABP) – The permanent secretary office of the multi-sector platform for food security and nutrition organized a workshop on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 in Bujumbura, for the media and journalists for the establishment of a network of media and journalists in order to contribute to the strengthening of food security and nutrition.

The establishment of the network of journalists for the strengthening of food security and nutrition in Burundi will contribute a lot in the mobilization given that the problems related to malnutrition are multisectoral and require a multisectoral response.

During a workshop to set up that network, the Minister of Communication, Information Technologies and the Media, Léocadie Ndacayisaba let it be known that this step taken is of paramount importance for the majority of the people of Burundi who use the media as sources of information.

As for the permanent executive secretary of the permanent secretary office of the multisectoral platform for food security and nutrition, Dr. Célestin Sibomana, nutrition problems have many factors of lack of information in that sector. According to him, among these factors the behavioral component occupies an important place: “Not knowing what to eat, not knowing how to eat and not knowing the promising initiatives to strengthen the diet of children in the family”, he said.

According to him, it would be difficult to move forward in this mobilization process, leaving aside the journalists who carry the message far through their media. “So, we want to put you in a network so that there is a game of complementarity; a synergy in the dissemination of information related to nutritional education and the adoption of behaviors favorable to effective nutrition for our children,” he said.

According to him, children who have suffered from chronic malnutrition have mental retardation, which therefore affects their learning in school and will be less productive as adults.

The workshop ended with the adoption of the bylaw of the network of journalists and media for the strengthening of food and nutritional security.
