CIBITOKI April 4th (ABP) – Thirteen lifeless bodies of gold miners searched since the evening of March 31, 2023 under the ground of a gold mine, after being buried by the torrents of a river which overflowed, have been finally found in the morning of April 2, on Gafumbegeti hill, Butahana zone of Mabayi commune.

They have all been identified. Ten are from the Butahana zone, two from Murwi commune, and the thirteenth is from Kayanza commune, who was returned to his native commune on the same day. The communal administration, supported by volunteers of the Burundi Red Cross since the search and rescue operation, proceeded, in the afternoon, to the dignified and safe burial of the disappeared.

Recall that this tragedy was caused by torrential rain which fell in Mabayi commune in the afternoon of March 31, causing the Rugogo River to overflow, which deviated from its usual bed, to fill the pits of a gold panning site, located on that hill. The Minister in charge of mines and government representative, accompanied by the governor, went to the scene for a message of appeasement to the families of the victims.
