CANKUZO January 17th (ABP) – The Minister of the Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Sanctus Niragira, made a trip on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 to Cankuzo province, to listen to and collect the complaints of the people while providing answers and clarifications, a check in Cankuzo by ABP has revealed.

In his welcoming speech, the governor of that province, Mr. Boniface Banyiyezako, exposed the problems of lack of personnel and means of transport in the agricultural sector, the undeveloped marshes, the lack of sufficient projects for the improvement of the yield, lack of oil palm nurseries, lack of storage sheds, to name but a few. He also pointed out the problem of –Totahaza– fertilizer which does not give expected rice yield.

Minister Niragira replied that a team of technicians is at work in different provinces including Cankuzo province to check if the components of that FOMI product are sufficient to improve the harvest of that crop.

Dr. Niragira also called on the people to fight against erosion and to protect the environment in general, in order to increase the yield of all crops.

In addition, he invited the people of Cankuzo province to adapt to the system of watering the fields during the dry season in order to increase production.

In relation to rabbit livestock, Minister Niragira reported that improved breeds of rabbits from abroad are available at ISABU for breeding before distribution.

Thus, to facilitate the supervision of farmers, the minister promised the recruitment of new staff to replace retirees.

With regard to lands occupied by the people, ceded by Rwandans in Mishiha commune and which cause confusion of ownership, the Minister replied that they will first carry out in-depth investigations before taking a decision.
