Official launch of the provisional release of detainees and defendants

GITEGA July 12th (ABP) – The Attorney General of the Republic of Burundi, Mr. Sylvestre Nyandwi, issued, Thursday, July 7, 2022, release tickets to six detainees from the central prison of Gitega (center), for materialize the operation to officially launch the provisional release of detainees and defendants. “These are the detainees and defendants who remained on the lot of those who benefited from the pardon announced by the President of the Republic of Burundi last year,” he said.

To continue, Mr. Nyandwi explained that the concern to do that job well was the motive which led to the delay in the implementation of this presidential measure. It was necessary to reconcile the rights of the victims and those of the prisoners released without being judged, he added, before explaining that they took time to collect the files and analyze the conditions of eligibility of these defendants to provisional release.

To the beneficiaries of the provisional release, Mr. Nyandwi asked to behave well and specially to avoid taunting the victims, arguing that this could lead to insecurity.

Also, he asked them to continue to appear, either before the prosecution or before the court, since their cases are following the normal course, he said. Finally, the Attorney General of the Republic has indicated that the provisional release operation will extend to all prisons in the country.
