GITEGA January 12th (ABP) – The Minister of Public Health and the Fight against AIDS, Dr. Sylvie Nzeyimana proceeded, on Monday December 10, 2022, to the official opening of the jubilee year of the centenary of the regional hospital de Gitega 1922-2022, located in the urban center of Gitega, in the country’s political capital (center).

The event was materialized by the laying of the first stone, on the site which will house the construction project of a maternity and neonatal unit called Kira Muvyeyi. That building falls within the framework of the renovation and extension of the hospital, under the financing of the own funds of that institution, as Minister Nzeyimana indicated in her speech for the occasion.

Designed at a cost of eight billion Burundian francs, the Kira Muvyeyi block will therefore require support, she said, before requesting the intervention of the technical and financial partners of the Burundian government in the realization of this project, of a duration of 15 months.

Minister Nzeyimana also chaired the start of the demolition of dilapidated infrastructure to be able to build the new site.

As for the director of the hospital, Dr. Eric Ndihokubwayo, the renovation and extension of the infrastructure was urgently needed. He said their dilapidated and cramped condition attracted patients and visitors.

In addition, Dr. Ndihokubwayo raised other challenges, including the lack of specialist doctors, a laboratory lacking modern equipment and various services.

The future prospects of the hospital will be the remedy to that situation, as stated by the director of that hospital. “We want the regional hospital of Gitega to be effectively the second national referral hospital”, he concluded.
