The DRC is facing a new wave of Covid-19 and the Omicron variant

KINSHASA December 15th (XINHUA) – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared on Monday, December 13, 2021, to be facing the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, according to a press release signed by the minister of Health, Jean-Jacques Bungani Mbanda. Due to epidemiological reports which “attest to an exceptional increase in the circulation of the virus”, the DRC is “once again facing a new wave of the pandemic”, the press release said, also confirming the presence of the new Omicron variant on its territory.

“Scientific data do indeed confirm the circulation of the Omicron variant on our territory”, the press release continues to say, specifying that care is provided effectively in all anti-Covid-19 centers. Since the start of the pandemic, the DRC has so far reported 54,009 confirmed cases of Covid-19, including 1,053 deaths.
