BUJUMBURA June 10th (ABP) – The leader of the Cooperative of Young People Decided for Development (COJEDEDE), Mr. Elie Nyandwi, said on Tuesday June 8, 2021 during an interview he gave to a check by ABP that the cooperative has made a huge contribution to reducing unemployment.

Initially, ten young graduates decided to found that cooperative after realizing that not all of them could access public jobs. They each contributed 100,000 BIF to have a capital of 1,000,000 BIF and settled on Gasenyi road, Gihosha zone of Ntahangwa commune. They started by processing soy milk and Tofu, Nyandwi said.

According to him, soy milk is produced from soybeans and water. He added that Tofu or soy cheese is a soft dough food. It is rich in magnesium, essential fatty acids, zinc, potassium and vitamin A. It can digest easily, he testified.

Additionally, he reported, soy milk does not contain casein (a milk protein that promotes increased cholesterol). It is free from lactose, the sugar specific to milk which causes digestive intolerance and it does not provide cholesterol.

Mr. Nyandwi claimed that one of the most important health benefits of soy milk is that it contains isoflavones, a type of plant hormone that protects against certain types of cancer and is especially proven beneficial for the reproductive system, heart and arteries.

On that occasion, he informed that a glass of soy milk costs 1400 BIF and a kilo of Tofu costs 8000 BIF. He let it be known that they had few customers but little by little they are hoping that they will come in large numbers.

Thanks to that profession, they manage to meet their daily needs. He called on young people to roll up their sleeves by teaming up with others in cooperatives in order to put ideas together, he insisted.
