KARUSI, May 30th (ABP) – The people, without exception, must be aware of the importance of avocado growing, which is now a commercial crop.

That was the watchword addressed to participants in last week’s launch of the avocado planting campaign in all the communes, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

According to Jean Séverin Sinzobatohana, Director of the BPEAE, avocados have really become an export crop, and the government has already taken a stand on that. Every household and public institution with a plot of land must make that government project their own, as it will undoubtedly generate income, including foreign currency.

According to the Director of the BPEAE, the technical services, particularly the communal agronomists, the assistant zone agronomists and the monitors, will be assessed on that basis.

Avocado-growing activities have been taking place in the communes, with some people ploughing and others planting nurseries, an initiative that the director welcomes.

Note that the Governor of Karusi province, Dévote Nizigiyimana, has already suggested that the population plant avocado trees all along the boundaries of individual agricultural properties, to replace the other customary boundary trees, Iminyare (Cactus- crayon).
