KARUSI January 9th (ABP) – The roles and responsibilities of village councilors and those of village notables are quite distinct, according to the second vice president of the senate Cyriaque Nshimirimana, the reason why the hierarchical authorities are called upon to organize explanatory sessions in the field to avoid confusion.

He pointed this out during community development work carried out in Shombo commune, where jackfruit trees were planted over 4 km along the RN12-Rusi-Rusi multi-trade school.

Mr. Nshimirimana specified that the newly elected village notables play the role of listening to the people in dispute and their witnesses, reconciling the two parties if possible or directing them to the courts of residence if this is impossible. They are prohibited from receiving criminal cases or collecting fines, the second vice president of the senate added.

The village councilors in turn have the duty to promote peace, security and the development of the village. They are there to prepare and implement the projects in the respective villages, he said. “The ambiguity is well removed, you must organize explanatory sessions”, he concluded.

With regard to communal administrators, Mr. Nshimirimana recalled the interest of regular monitoring of Sangwe cooperatives, because this will be included in the performance evaluation criteria.

In his welcoming address, the governor of Karusi province, Mrs. Dévote Nizigiyimana, expressed the urgent need to have a public university in the province or at least one of the university faculties in order to limit the cases of wastage, after general and technical education, which causes discouragement leading to school dropouts.

Recall that the two personalities took the floor after the community development work consisting in growing jack fruit trees during the campaign “Ewe Burundi urambaye”.
