BUJUMBURA January 9th (ABP) – The Burundi Head of State Evariste Ndayishimiye signed on Monday, January 9, 2023, in the book of condolences in memory of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who died on December 31, 2022. It was at the Embassy of the Holy See to Burundi.

Following the demise of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the President of the Republic, through his twitter account, had, on behalf of the people of Burundi and on his own behalf, offered his most saddened condolences to his Holiness the Pope and to the whole Catholic Church that “the illustrious deceased led with wisdom”, as well as to the bereaved family.

Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at his Vatican residence, aged 95, nearly a decade after stepping down due to failing health. He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years before becoming, in 2013, the first pope to step down since Gregory XII. Benedict XVI was already 78 years old when he became pope in 2005. Benedict XVI spent his last years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery inside the Vatican.
