NEW YORK December 21st (XINHUA) — China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, commended on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, the adoption by the UN Security Council of a resolution to renew the term of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) and a resolution to lift the notification regime on the purchase of arms from the DRC.

Currently, the security situation in eastern DRC remains dire, with armed groups occupying large areas and seriously threatening the lives and property of the people. In the current circumstances, the renewal of the term of the United Nations peacekeeping mission is conducive to regional peace and stability, and meets the expectations of the DRC government. China thus voted in favor of the draft resolution, explained Mr. Zhang.

China also praises another resolution that ends the DRC government’s arms procurement notification regime, he added.

In recent years, China, together with African countries, has called for the lifting or adjustment of sanctions measures against African countries, he said.

China expects the Security Council to remain united on sanctions-related issues and, in light of the latest developments, to adjust and remove the arms embargo against African countries, such as the Sudan, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, to create the conditions for those governments to build their security capabilities, Zhang said.
