KAYANZA September 12th (ABP) – The governor of Kayanza province (northern Burundi), Colonel Rémy Cishahayo, gathered on Thursday, September 8, 2022, in the headquarters of the province, the communal directors of education, all school principals, communal administrators and communal secretaries of the ruling CNDD-FDD party. The objective of that meeting was to discuss the challenges that haunt this sector and the solutions to be brought to them with a view to improving academic performance, especially in the national competitions and examinations for the next school year.

Brushing the current situation of the education sector, the provincial director of Education in Kayanza, Mr. Désiré Hatungimana inventoried the challenges facing the education sector. and which, consequently, cause bad results. He cited the plethora of pupils in the classrooms which, according to him, leads to the lack of desks and classrooms. Added to this is the lack of teaching staff.

Mr. Hatungimana also mentioned 19,000 cases of school dropouts, due to ignorance, early marriages, unwanted pregnancies and poverty.

The same school authority in Kayanza deplored the fact that teachers and parents are no longer aware of their mission to educate and that the resources allocated each year to basic schools and communal education directorates are limited.

To overcome all those challenges, Governor Cishahayo has made a series of recommendations. To the teachers, he asked to complete the programs and to respect the working hours. As for the communal directors of education and those of schools, he demanded that they strengthen local supervision and that they check whether teachers prepare the lessons they teach. In addition, they were called upon to denounce, in real time, the deserting teachers so that they are revoked and replaced immediately. Communal  administrators were, for their part, invited to become actively involved in the education sector in order to raise the success rate in national competitions and examinations.

Recall that the school province of Kayanza ranks seventh in the national competition for the 9th fundamental year for the 2021-2022 school year while it had occupied 5th place the previous school year.
