GITEGA August 1st (ABP) – Journalists working in the north of the country are challenged to fight for the transformation of conflicts and the consolidation of peace. That was revealed during a capacity building workshop for journalists from community media on journalism for peace organized by the Association for Cooperation and Research for Development (ACORD Burundi) in Gitega (center of the country) from July 26 to 28, 2022.

Through that workshop, those media professionals should be strengthened on the techniques of collecting, processing and disseminating information for peace and development as well as their role and responsibility.

It is therefore a question of making the media understand its role in building peace for a still fragile country that has experienced repetitive violence since its independence in 1962.

At the end of that workshop, the journalists will have to host programs, produce articles to sensitize the communities to the role of citizens in the development of their localities and thus contribute to the dissemination of good practices for good governance.

As Mrs. Sophie Havyarimana, in charge of the Gender component, points out, through her Citizen Participation and Conflict Prevention Program carried out in 17 municipalities in the Ngozi, Kayanza, Kirundo and Muyinga Provinces, ACORD Burundi intends to establish a partnership with eight community radio stations established in the Program intervention area.

Thus, those community media will help to improve the level of participation in the prevention and transformation of conflicts at the community level, local governance mechanisms for a less risky lifestyle.
