KAYANZA July 19th (ABP) – The Burundi Red Cross proceeded on Friday, July 15, 2022, to the presentation and official launch of the community resilience program (2022-2027), which will affect 79 villages in the three communes, namely Gahombo, Gatara and Muhanga from the Gahombo health district in Kayanza province (north).

That program will intervene in the follow-up of the level of the households in transformation of the indicators relating to health, in the creation of clubs in the schools and universities, for the promotion of the blood donation and in the synergy with the Belgian actors in the field of health.

The said five-year program will also concern itself with regular screening of the nutritional status of children, training of light mothers on community management of malnutrition and referral to health centers if necessary for management by health structures.

The Red Cross, through that new program, will distribute small livestock and develop savings and credit associations.

The same program will set up community disaster risk reduction committees and organize community training and sensitization on risk prevention.

With regard to the expected results, the person in charge of the health sector within the Burundi Red Cross, Dr. Donatien Uwizeyimana, who presented the project, indicated that the communities and in particular the households being transformed into model households, will adopt best practices for preventing the main health problems (malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, Covid-19). In addition, the targeted communities will have access to and make proper use of water and sanitation infrastructure.

Dr. Uwizeyimana emphasized that the malnutrition of children under five in the targeted communities will be improved. These same targeted communities will integrate the environmental dimension into their production and living environment improvement activities.

In his opening speech at the launch meeting of this program, the governor of Kayanza, Mr. Rémy Cishahayo welcomed the establishment of the community resilience program (2022-2027) and took the opportunity to urge its beneficiaries and the municipalities concerned to work in synergy to achieve the targeted objectives.
