Validation of the sector strategy for the development of statistics at the Ministry of Communication

BUJUMBURA June 2nd (ABP) – The Minister of Communication, Information Technology and the Media, Mrs. Léocadie Ndacayisaba, opened on Tuesday, May 31, 222, at the Source du Nil hotel, a workshop to validate the strategy development of statistics and the methodology for producing and updating the statistical yearbook of that ministry.

According to Mrs. Ndacayisaba, this is the first sector strategy for the development of statistics drawn up within the ministry and it will provide reliable and updated statistical data. She added that the statistical committee of the ministry has also drawn up the methodology for producing and updating its third statistical yearbook. All this work accomplished meets the government’s objective, through the PND 2018-2022, to make statistics a knight on which all decision-making process is based.

Minister Ndacayisaba indicated that this strategy aims to promote a coordinated, inclusive and innovative statistical system, capable of making regularly available with professionalism, consistent and reliable statistics of the Communication, Media, Telecommunications and Posts sector. That document also sets out a multi-year plan of activities, expresses the human, material and financial resources required and sets out the mechanisms for implementation, monitoring and evaluation. The overall amount over four years from 2022 to 2026 is more than one billion five hundred million BIF.

She specified that the success factors of the strategy lie in the ownership and commitment of officials at all levels as well as the involvement of all actors from the programming phase. She called on all technical and financial partners to continue to support the efforts of the ministry responsible for media for this major project to be successful.

According to the representative of the Director General of ISTEEBU, who provided technical support in carrying out this work, the culture of statistics must be rooted in Burundian society. Ministerial departments and even those working in the communication and ICT sector are called upon to cooperate in order to communicate figures which will be requested of them by the technical committee in charge of statistics.

Before proceeding with the validation of those documents, the participants followed the presentations on the sector strategy for the development of statistics and the methodology for producing and updating the statistical yearbook of the Ministry. It is worthy to let you know that those documents will also be validated by the National Statistical Committee.
