CANKUZO April 20th (ABP) – A large number of road accidents recorded in Cankuzo province (eastern Burundi) are caused by motorcycle and bicycle taxi riders, according to the police.

Information gathered from the provincial police station indicates that the poor loading of motorbike taxis when their users do not even have any required documents, ignorance of the Traffic Laws, excessive speed among motorcyclists as well as among bicycle taxi riders, are the cause of accidents.

Indeed, out of two cases of accidents recorded, one person died and two others were injured during the month of March 2022, according to the same information sources.

During a session of moralization on the awakening of patriotism that the governor of that province, Mr. Boniface Banyiyezako held in Mishiha commune early April, the police revealed that they are already informed that some motorcycles carry Tanzanian origin plates. To that end, their users have been warned that such motorcycles will be confiscated to be recovered after presenting their complete documents of Burundian origin.

In order to significantly reduce these cases of accidents which occur in that province, the provincial police commissioner in Cankuzo, Mr. Jean Claude Ntirandekura, indicates that, via the administration, the awareness campaign on the disposal and the importance of those documents for motorcycle taxi drivers has already started.

Moreover, those who do not meet the conditions will be subject to sanctions in accordance with the law.
