BUJUMBURA 28th (ABP) – The National Police of Burundi (PNB) seized on Wednesday May 26, 2021, in the Mutakura neighborhood of Bujumbura city council, a refreshment bar where there were prohibited drinks commonly called “Inkoneseri”, more than 100 plastic barrels and more than 100 empty bags of sugar as well as other powdered products, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

As there has been a very increased shortage of sugar, Mr. Pierre Nkurikiye, the spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, Community Development and Public Security, said that the police investigated to be able to determine the cause of that shortage.

According to the police investigation, Mr. Pierre Nkurikiye indicated that the owner of that refreshment bar gets supply from banana wine which is bought in Rugombo commune in the province of Cibitoke, and when he comes here with 15 plastic barrels for example, he uses that sugar to be able to produce many other plastic barrels.

Adding sugar and water to it, he can make up to more than 25 barrels of the prohibited drink, he said.

As for hygiene during the manufacture and sales of that drink, the observation is that those drinks are made in latrines and with rotten products and afterwards, they are distributed to the people and this has harmful effects on health, Mr. Pierre Nkurikiye insisted.

To that end, Mr. Nkurikiye took the opportunity to deny anyone who imagines that this sugar shortage is due to certain government authorities who engage in fraudulent trade in that product, but rather to citizens among whom those of the city of Bujumbura who do it clandestinely, adding that this refreshment bar itself could cause a shortage of sugar in the Bujumbura city council given the quantity of sugar used in the manufacture of those prohibited drinks.

Regarding the information held by the police, Mr. Pierre Nkurikiye indicated that the owner of that refreshment bar would have five other places similar to that one and he does not work alone because, he indicated, he is a member of a cooperative that sells that banana wine.

However, he also reported that there are suspicions of other members of that cooperative practicing the same thing.

Mr. Nkurikiye called on all the people from that locality in all their tendencies, starting with the local administration, to immediately pull themselves together so that they are the eye and the ear of the institutions of the police and justice so that nobody indulges any more in such practices which make that the citizens no longer obtain that product which is very necessary for their life.

It is worth recalling that this investigation led to the arrest of two employees working in that refreshment bar and the owner has not yet been apprehended.
