The President of the Republic received in audience the United Nations special envoy for the Great Lakes region

BUJUMBURA March 10th (ABP) – The President of the Republic, Evariste Ndayishimiye received, Wednesday March 6, 2024, the United Nations special envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Huang Xia, accompanied by Mr. Valentin Zellweger, ambassador, permanent representative of the United Nations Office in Nairobi, at the same time ambassador of Switzerland to Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda.

According to the spokesperson for the Presidency of the Republic, Rosine Guilène Gatoni, discussions between the President of the Republic and that delegation revolved around the situation in the DRC.

Indeed, the latter had co-organized, for 2 days from March 4 to 5, 2024, a conference on the situation in the Great Lakes Region, where the stakeholders of the Framework Agreement for Peace and Security in the DRC participated and the Great Lakes Region. When President Ndayishimiye was appointed to monitor the implementation of that Framework Agreement, they came to discuss with him the security situation within that region and the potential forces to help the DRC to ensure the return of peace and security, said Mrs. Gatoni.

The conclusion that emerges is that blood continues to flow while many refugees require international aid.

According to the spokesperson for the presidency, during those exchanges the Burundian president expressed his satisfaction with the commitment that the latter displayed and insisted on the coordination of the efforts of the entire international community to support the DRC in recovering peace and security.
