GITEGA Apr 14 (ABP) – The Burundian Senate unanimously passed, on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, in its hemicycle based in Gitega (central Burundi), the bill on the ratification by the Republic of Burundi of the agreement of financing N° D 9440-BI between the Republic of Burundi and the International Development Association, in favor of the support project for productive social safety nets and jobs (Merankabandi), signed in Bujumbura, on January 24, 2022.

In his explanatory memorandum, the Minister of National Solidarity, Social Affairs, Human Rights and Gender, Mrs. Imelde Sabushimike made it clear that the financing agreement for the project in question concerns 150 million US dollars. She clarified that this donation is intended to bring the Merankabandi project to a national scale. The beneficiaries of the project are at least estimated at 145,000 households, including 100,000 poverty-stricken households, 25,000 households economically affected by Covid-19 and 20,000 refugee and host community households, Minister Sabushimike explained.

For further clarification, she said that the ratification of that financing agreement will make it possible to raise the standard of living of poverty-stricken and vulnerable households through the monetary transfer and accompanying measures.
