RUYIGI, August 1st (ABP) – The population of Ruyigi, the resident natives, those of the diaspora and the natives of other provinces working and living in that province are called upon to respond massively to the collection of food and non-food items intended to assist the most vulnerable in the said province.

The appeal was made by the head of the office of the governor of Ruyigi, Mr. Valery Nkunzimana, during a multi-sectoral meeting to prepare the day dedicated to local solidarity scheduled for August this year. He therefore invites the population to make more effort so that all the most vulnerable can be served and rise in development.

According to a report presented by Mrs. Christelle Gakima of the provincial directorate of family and social development, the Ruyigi province was able to collect nearly 11 tons of food and a sum of 4 million during the assistance collection campaign dedicated to local solidarity for the 2023 edition. The food consisted of 5.64 tons of rice, 4.565 tons of beans, 2.153 of maize, 2.370 of cassava flour as well as 115 kg of sweet potato, and 1646 beneficiaries were assisted.

For the chief of staff in the office of the governor of Ruyigi, Mr. Valéry Nkunzimana, this aid remains far from sufficient to serve all the needy, numbering more than 2,900. He deplores the fact that the population, as a whole, shows little enthusiasm for assisting the most deprived.

He noted that Ruyigi province currently has 131,934 households and estimates that if for this year’s local solidarity day, each household gave at least 1 kg of food, all the needy would be assisted, because 130 tons would be available.

Mr. Nkunzimana subsequently clarified that the collection period for the said day is from August 2 to 9, 2024. He hopes that no one should claim that the period is insufficient to provide his assistance. That person in authority reminded the participants that assistance to the most deprived has always been one of the values bequeathed to Burundians by their foreparents.
