BUBANZA, August 1st (ABP) – The Director of the Provincial Office of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock (BPEAE), in Bubanza (North-West of Burundi), Sylvestre Ndayishimiye, says he is optimistic that the harvest will be good, for this growing season C.
He told a check by ABP that in Bubanza province, 1455.5 hectares are planned for exploitation during this season C, and most of these land properties are swamps. Planned crops are maize, beans, sweet potatoes and market garden crops. And the expected harvest, for maize only, is at least 3.5 tons per hectare, he continued to tell the check by ABP.
Some of the farmers contacted, mentioned the constraint related to the lack of hybrid maize seeds which, according to them, give them a larger harvest than those of local varieties.
Mr. Ndayishimiye calls on farmers to take advantage of the passage of watercourses, mini-dams that were built by the ministry responsible for agriculture, for the irrigation of their fields during this dry season. The other call is oriented towards abiding by the injunctions of agricultural technicians, for modern agriculture.
Note that the BPEAE Bubanza, in collaboration with the administration, plans to draw contour lines over the area of 268 hectares, in order to increase agricultural production.
