GITEGA, June 21st (ABP) – The Mugera parish located in Bugendana commune, Gitega province (central part of the country) celebrated its 125th anniversary on Saturday, June 15, 2024.
The ceremonies, which began with a thanksgiving mass, were attended by many personalities. These included members of the Burundian government, including the Minister of Commerce, Transport, Industry and Tourism, Mrs. Chantal Nijimbere, Catholic Church prelates, several priests and representatives of religious denominations from different parts of the country, as well as many Christians from the Mugera parish and its surroundings.
In his homily, the Archbishop of the Diocese of Gitega, Mgr. Bonaventure Nahimana, recommended to the congregation to change their mentality because they have entered into a relationship with Christ, the son of the Living God. This will be reflected in the renunciation of sins, the source of lies, injustice and obscurantist practices, he explained. In this way, he hammered, you will have invested for eternity rather than for the ephemeral.
On behalf of the Burundian government, Minister Nijimbere wished a happy anniversary to the Catholic Church of Burundi. She saluted the partnership that exists between the Catholic Church and the Burundian government, through its support, in leading the Burundian people to well-being.
As a sign of recognition of the government’s multiple gestures towards the Mugera parish, the parish priest presented it with a certificate of honor.
Note that the Mugera parish, created in 1899, is the second, after that of Muyaga, in the province of Cankuzo (East of Burundi). The Mugera parish was also the first diocese of Burundi.
