CIBITOKE June 3rd (ABP) – A training and awareness workshop on the legal and regulatory texts for people living with disabilities (PVH), was organized from May 30 to 31, at the headquarters of Cibitoke province, by the cooperation agency of the association of Dutch municipalities (VNG international), for the province’s public services, NGOs and civil society organizations.

The purpose of the workshop was to convince the participants to commit to promoting the rights of people with disabilities, for their autonomy, and for their contribution to the development of the country, a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

For VNG International’s Program Assistant, Mrs. Nadia Uwimana, the sustainable development goal requires leaving no one behind, to move towards development. The same leader, also living with a disability, said that disabled people have abilities and talents, and are capable of anything other people do, provided the environment is favorable. She has invited the community to remove certain barriers preventing people living with disabilities from flourishing and contributing to development.

She stressed that society must embrace those barriers, which handicap the rights and actions of disabled people. She took issue with certain acts of charity, which keep people with disabilities dependent. She recognized the protection of the Burundian government towards disabled people, through the ratification of the United Nations Convention on People with Disabilities; the specific law signed on January 18, 2018, but asks that there also be texts accompanying those laws and conventions.

As for the advisor to the governor of Cibitoke, in charge of development, Mr. Ruben Tubirabe, he indicated that people with disabilities are protected and supervised like other citizens. He specified that in the cultural and sports activities, the disabled people take part in them, in competitions where they benefit even from the supports of the administration. He pointed out that associations of people living with disabilities are approved in Cibitoke, while their lists continue to be established in the communes, so that the latter benefit like the others from various supports, not to mention to give them jobs.

Nevertheless, the governor’s advisor has called on people living with disabilities to self-esteem, to come out of hiding, to demand their inclusion in community development plans. It is worth noting that the participants were each committed in their own field, to actions aimed at promoting the rights of people with disabilities, and their contributions to the development of the country.
