CANKUZO May 30th (ABP) – Some rabbit raisers in Cankuzo province complain that the losses are considerable due to the lack of veterinarians. During an interview given to a check by ABP, they praise the government’s initiative to promote that livestock, because it is less expensive than other types of domestic animals, and the rabbit reproduction takes a short time.

However, they lament that they are recording a lot of losses due to the lack of better trained agents in the consultation and treatment of rabbit diseases in that province. For example, Mr. Bizimana from Cankuzo village recorded a loss of 20 dead rabbits last month.

The provincial director of the environment, agriculture and livestock in that province, Mr. Melchiade Ntahondereye, has confirmed that challenge as each commune has only one veterinarian who cannot cover all the villages alone. He has reassured that training for rabbit stockbreeders on rabbit diseases and their signs as well as the behavior they must adopt, will be provided.

In addition, such training will be organized for agents who were trained before the introduction of rabbit farming, within the framework of development projects operating in that province, to help closely monitor the health of other domestic animals.

Note that the statistics issued by the provincial Bureau of the environment, agriculture and livestock until February 2023, show that the Gisagara commune comes in first position in the rabbit farming while the Mishiha commune stands for the last position.
