In her speech, the First Lady of Burundi at the same chairperson of that foundation, Mrs. Angéline Ndayishimiye indicated that sterility is a real problem in Burundi at a time when Burundian society attaches great importance to the child. To this end, she advised married couples who spend a year childless to consult professionals in the matter.

Mrs. Ndayishimiye pointed out that this center will give childless couples the chance to exercise their reproductive rights through access to the facilities offered by modern technology in the field of infertility. It is time for Burundians to renounce categorically the bad habit of mistreating infertile people, she stressed.

The purpose of this workshop is to inform health professionals and administrative leaders about the techniques for managing infertility existing in Burundi and to discuss the main causes of infertility as well as strategies for support at the community level.

The Chairperson and CEO of Merck Foundation, Dr. Rasha Kelej encouraged the Burundian first lady for her establishment of a center for the care of legally married infertile couples. She called on other First Ladies to set up similar centers in their countries to combat infertility.

Mrs. Kelej promised that there will be other capacity building programs to combat infertility in Burundi, pointing out that 51 doctors have already been trained.

On this occasion, Merck Foundation offered the Burundian first lady a certificate of honor as an encouragement.
