BUJUMBURA February 27th (ABP) – The opening tournament of the 2023 Viva Basketball League (VBL) Championship started on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the sports department field in Bujumbura City Council (western Burundi), a check on the site by ABP has revealed.

Organized by the Basketball Federation of Burundi (FEBABU), the tournament called NANI MKHALI saw the participation of seven clubs for men namely Dynamo, Kern, Tigers, Urunani, Remesha, Gymkhana and the Hippos and four women’s teams including the Gazelles, Messager Ngozi, Young Sisters and the Gladiators, all playing in the Association of Basketball Clubs of Bujumbura (ACBAB).

On the agenda of the day, were scheduled two matches only for men. The first match opposed the teams the Hippos and Tigers, a balanced match from the start and the Tigers team, the penultimate in the VBL2022 ranking, was able to break away from the opposing team after half-time and dominated the game which propelled it to victory thanks to its new recruits, easily defeating the Hippos team, with a score of 80 points to 60. The second match which was interrupted at the start of the 3rd quarter by the rain, pitted the teams Dynamo and Gymkhana against each other, a balanced match while fans of the orange ball expected Gymkhana that had just lost their two key elements, transferred to the Urunani club, to be literally stretched, Gymkhana stood their ground in front Dynamo, however metamorphosed, with new Congolese recruits for the most part.

From the start, the score was so close that at the half-time break the score was only one point difference, 39-40, in favor of Dynamo. Coming back from the break, in the first seconds, new recruit Alvin Ninziza scored 3 points giving Dynamo a 4-point lead (39-43) and the rain didn’t help matters, the match was suspended and will be played again on Wednesday.

Note that fans of the orange ball ask that Burundi be equipped with a covered basketball court that meets international standards as is the case in the countries of the sub-region, in order to overcome that untimely stop of matches every time it rains, forcing team supporters to pay the entrance ticket again if the match is postponed.
