BUJUMBURA September 26th (ABP) – The NGO Caritas Burundi and the “Laudato Si Burundi” movement are organizing a week of plastic waste collection in different cities of the country. According to the secretary general of Caritas Burundi, Abbé Jean Baptiste Hakizimana, from September 1, 2022 to October 4, 2022 a particular campaign calls for the protection of creation.

He explains that this is stipulated in an encyclical letter from Pope Francis, dated May 24, 2015 “Laudato Si” (Praise be to you, Lord). A letter that challenges the protection of creation: our common home. If there is no protection, the most vulnerable suffer first, he said. In Burundi, he says that young people have organized themselves through this movement “Laudato Si Burundi”.

The week of September 19 to 25 is devoted to hygiene and sanitation in cities. The effective collection of this plastic waste will begin on Thursday, September 22, 2022, with the collection of this waste in the COTEBU market place, in Bujumbura Town Hall. Still in Bujumbura Town Hall, Friday September 23, it will be the turn of Lake Tanganyika and collection will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Saturday September 24, 2022, the collection will be done in the 3 communes of the City of Bujumbura and in the headquarters of the provinces Gitega, Rumonge and Bubanza. Abbé Bizimana announces that this campaign will end with a mass which will be celebrated at Kanyosha parish on October 4, 2022.

He invites the people of the cities concerned to participate massively in that collection campaign which benefits the whole community. That campaign is celebrated as part of the Season of Creation initiated by Pope Francis, under the theme: “Let’s listen to creation and recover our plastic waste”.
