GITEGA September 13th (ABP) – The First Lady of Burundi, Mrs. Angeline Ndayishimiye, has sensitized the population to use long-acting insecticide-treated mosquito nets (LLINs) only for the exclusive purpose of prevention against malaria. That is at least the marrow substance of a speech she delivered on the occasion of the official ceremonies to launch the LLIN distribution campaign, on September 9, 2022, at the Catholic parish stadium of Murayi, in the commune of Giheta, in the province of Gitega (center of the country).

Mrs. Ndayishimiye took issue, by way of illustration, against the rural population who deprives themselves of mosquito nets to protect their tomato fields against animal pests, others for raising chickens and still others in fishing for fish, although that technique of using mosquito nets is also discouraged in fishing by the services in charge of environmental protection. She advised everyone to sleep under the long-acting insecticide-treated mosquito net to better prevent malaria.

The First Lady of Burundi also spoke about the fight against any source of mosquito proliferation, citing among other things tufts of grass near dwelling houses, puddles and unsanitary conditions.

Previously, the WHO representative in Burundi had raised in his communication that malaria constitutes a major threat to the African people south of the Sahara.

As for the resident representative of the UNDP, he indicated that, for the current campaign, 6,648,611 LLINs will be distributed during the two weeks in 1665 sites including social groups (military camps, orphanage, detention houses, etc.) for an overall cost of approximately $23,656,885, representing 47,758,129,983 BIF. He promised the availability of UNDP to continue to support Burundi in its efforts to achieve the objectives of the 2030 agenda, aimed at improving the living conditions of the Burundians.
